Student killed on bus in North Carolina

Student died after being struck by a bus on a road in North Charleston, a police spokesman said.

The incident happened at about 11 a.m. on Saturday, when the bus driver attempted to pull over to avoid a traffic jam, said Sgt. Michael McNeill of the North Charleston Police Department.

The driver, identified as 27-year-old Michael R. Thomas, was struck by the bus as he was backing up.

Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, who was not named, has not been arrested, McNeill said.

Police said the bus was carrying around 2,000 students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University at Charlotte.
